Following the lack of a reliable market for maize crops for Ludewa farmers in Njombe region and leading to the sale of the maize at a price of shs. 350 to 250 kg is finally solved.
The solution came after Ludewa State MP-elect Joseph Kamonga conveyed the farmers’ cry to Vice President Samia Suluhu Hasan when he arrived in the constituency for a campaign visit to pray for President John Magufuli.
The vice president said that after receiving the information, he contacted the National Food Reserve Agency (NFRA) without delay and was told that before next Friday they will have set up an office to buy the maize at a price of shs. 530 to 550 per kg.
“After being informed of this problem of the maize market at the same time I made contact with the NFRA where they have received it immediately and started implementation,” said the vice president.
Along with that also ed. Samia said they are in the process of building warehouses capable of storing more tons of various crops that will be built in the villages of Shauri moyo and Mundindi in the district.
He added that other improvements are in the livestock sector where more than one million shillings and eight million for the construction of modern abattoirs.
On the other hand, the people thanked the MP for conveying their grievances as at least for now they can see the benefits of agriculture.
Julius Haule, one of the district’s farmers, said they had been spending a lot of money on agriculture but there were no benefits.
“We have been spending a lot of money on buying fertilizers, seeds, and putting in assistants in the fields but if you harvest you meet a low price of maize which is something you have to sell anyway because I have a hard time with money but if you calculate you find yourself spending more on farming than the profit you got after harvesting,” he said. Said Haule.
